As they say, you are only as good as your reputation. And reputation matters more now than ever.
With almost 3 billion people online it can be tough to keep track of who’s talking about you.
After all, anyone can Google you at any time and this digital paper trail can make or break your reputation.
Google has created an era of transparency and authenticity. Everything you say and do – good or bad – is here to stay. That may sound like some scary sci-fi fantasy world, but the reality is you have nothing to hide.
You want to be seen. You have a powerful message. You’re building an enduring brand. And you’re here to stay. Google can be your secret weapon.
Every single piece of content you produce is like a door that opens onto your world and draws people to your website. The more doors you create, the more people will enter and start talking about you.
You want to be able to know what they’re saying. Not just to manage your reputation online but to join the dialogue and give thanks and praise to those who support you.
Luckily, you don’t have to spend time trawling the web looking for mentions of you and your company. Google will do the tracking for you and send an email every time someone references you online.
If you haven’t set up Google Alerts for your name and your company name, I’d recommend taking 5 minutes to do this now. If you want to take this to the next level, you can also monitor your top keywords and track mentions of the top voices in your field.
How do you set up a Google Alert? It’s as simple as 1-2-3.
1. Visit https://www.google.com/alerts
2. Enter your name, company name or keyword in the search query field. (NOTE: Put your search term in quotes if you want to restrict alerts to the exact phrase.)
3. Set your preferences and hit “Create Alert”.
Voilá. You’ve now set up a tool for online reputation management. All you’ve got to do is read the emails and follow-up.
